In a landmark decision on February 6, 2025, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) voted 4-1 to approve a gaming license for Cedar Rapids, marking a victorious end to the city's 12-year quest for a casino. The $275 million Cedar Crossing Casino and Entertainment Center project is set to break ground on February 7, 2025, promising to deliver unprecedented economic and cultural benefits to Iowa's second-largest city.

A Long-Awaited Victory for Cedar Rapids

After two unsuccessful attempts in 2014 and 2017, Cedar Rapids has finally secured approval for its casino project. This achievement follows strong community support, demonstrated through two successful casino referendums in 2013 and 2021. The persistence of local leaders, developers, and community supporters has transformed what Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell called a "long shot" into reality.

Economic Impact: A Transformative Investment

Job Creation and Employment Opportunities

The Cedar Crossing project will generate significant employment opportunities across multiple phases:

During the 18-month construction period, the project will create approximately 1,100 full-time equivalent construction jobs, with over half of these positions going to Linn County residents. The construction phase alone is projected to generate $303 million in additional spending throughout Iowa, including $102 million in wage earnings.

Once operational, Cedar Crossing will provide:

  • 300 direct on-site jobs

  • 224 additional ancillary jobs in the community

  • Competitive wages and benefits packages

  • Diverse employment opportunities across gaming, hospitality, entertainment, and administrative sectors

  • Arts and culture

  • Community development

  • Public safety

Infrastructure and Development

Strategic Location and Design

The casino will be built between F and I avenues NW and First and Fifth streets NW, featuring:
