SETTING UP UTILITIES

Who to contact to get electricity, gas, water, and trash + recycling picked up.

What are “Utilities”?

Utilities are the things you need to keep your home up and running. These include: Electricity, Gas, Water, and Trash + Recycling pick up. When you move into a new home, you will need all of these services. This page will help you set up all utilities.

When calling to get utilities in your name, start by saying “I am moving, and I need to get service set up in my name for my new address.” They will help you from there.

  1. ELECTRICITY

Setting up your Electricity, so that you have working lights, and power to all of your appliances is important. Depending on your new address, you will need to use either Alliant Energy OR Linn County REC. You can set this up online or you can call them directly. If you live within city limits, typically you will use Alliant Energy. It you live outside of city limits, you might need to contact Linn County REC.

If you prefer, you can do all of this on the phone. To call these companies, click below.

2. GAS

You will need to set up service to provide gas to your home. This will allow for you to have hot water and heat. If you have a gas stove or fireplace, this will also allow that to work. In our area, MidAmerican Energy will be the company you use for this service.

3. WATER, GARBAGE + RECYCLING

You will need to set up city services to get drinking water, wastewater treatment, along with garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection and disposal. To set up city utilities, call by clicking on the city you are going to live in. You will set out your garbage and recycling bins each week. When you call to set up these services, ask what day your garbage and recycling is collected so you know what day to have your bins sitting by the road.
